A Day in the Life of a Compliance Manager
When asked to describe his typical day, Zivko emphasized the variability of his role, influenced by numerous factors. “The typical workday depends on so many factors. In general, the Compliance Manager oversees a company’s policies and standards to ensure all departments follow required rules and regulations,” he explained. His responsibilities include planning, directing, and coordinating activities to ensure compliance with ethical and regulatory standards. Staying updated on relevant laws and regulations, especially those from the DOT and FAA, is crucial. “If regulations change, I have to ensure they are applied and followed by every department in our organization. Open communication and a deep understanding of any change are key,” he added.
Managing Priorities in a Fast-Paced Environment
In the fast-paced aviation industry, prioritizing tasks effectively is essential. Zivko highlighted the clear and unequivocal nature of compliance requirements: “The rules and regulations about Compliance requirements are very clear. They must be followed and applied with no exceptions. There is no more or less important task, but time-sensitive tasks are always on the top of my list.”
Overcoming Challenges
Zivko’s role comes with its share of challenges, particularly in ensuring that VP Aviation’s technicians meet DOT/FAA standards and customer requirements. “Working with people is challenging by itself. We must be sure that our employees possess all necessary skills, certifications, and ability to be ‘on duty’ at the exact time and location,” he noted. This involves rigorous pre-employment testing, background checks, and verification of a clean drug/alcohol history. “All of this implies exceptional time-management and organizational skills,” he remarked.
A Decade in the Transportation Industry
Reflecting on his career, Zivko shared insights into his journey in the transportation industry. “My career in the transportation industry started more than ten years ago. That wasn’t my first choice, but day by day, I found myself a good fit in this role,” he said. His growth in the field was supported by mentors who generously shared their knowledge and experience. “Over the years, I grew, improved myself, and invested in my education. It wasn’t easy, but as a former teacher, I knew that hard work would pay off,” he added. Despite facing numerous challenges, including DOT audits and demanding travel schedules, Zivko values the diverse interactions and experiences his job has afforded him.
